For a year, Lara Donnelly and Eliot Routh sustained a long-distance relationship. She lived in Harlem and he in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn.
She was renting a room in a two-bedroom co-op, while he had a rotating cast of roommates in a five-bedroom rental. On a good day, with perfect connections and no delays, the subway ride from one apartment to the other took 45 minutes. On a bad day, it was two and a half hours.
